Painters in Brighton

Period homes, render and weatherboard, a few streets back from the bay. We have taken a Brighton house right through, inside and out, over about a month. Salt air is the reason preparation matters more here than almost anywhere else in Melbourne.

What Brighton houses ask for

  • Salt air does the damage hereBrighton sits on Port Phillip Bay, and the wind comes off the water carrying salt. On the exposed elevations, usually the south and west walls, a coat that would last comfortably inland chalks and fades years earlier. That is a preparation problem before it is a paint problem: salt has to come off the surface first, or the new coat is sitting on it.
  • Ornate plaster, and a lot of itThe older streets are full of Victorian and Edwardian homes with deep cornices, ceiling roses, panelled ceilings, picture rails and wall niches. Plaster like that cannot be rolled or sprayed over without losing the detail. It gets cut in by hand, line by line, which is slow and is the whole reason it still looks sharp afterwards.
  • Render, weatherboard and everything in betweenBrighton is not one kind of house. Rendered facades sit next to weatherboard cottages and modern rebuilds, and each takes a different preparation: render wants cracks cut out and made good, weatherboard wants sanding, filling and priming before a finish coat goes anywhere near it.
  • Heritage streetsParts of Brighton sit under heritage controls, and what is allowed differs street by street. We check with the council on what applies to your address before we quote colours, rather than assuming.
Recent work

Two jobs in Brighton, inside and out

Both of these came off the same job: a large Brighton home taken through inside and out. It ran about a month and Mark put a team together for it, working room by room through the interior and then out to the exterior timber.

Period house in Brighton, ornate plaster kept white

Rooms taken to a deep blue grey, with the panelled ceilings, deep cornices, ceiling rose, French doors, wall niches and skirtings all held in white. The owner could not settle on a colour and asked Mark to choose it, and was very happy with where it landed. A feature wall went in behind the television. Floors were boarded and skirtings taped before a tin was opened.

Cedar bifold frames, stained and sealed

The exterior hardwood from the same Brighton job. The cedar bifold frames were stained and finished with a clear coat, the same system used on the windows. Decking on that job took deck paint instead, because a floor takes traffic and a frame does not.

What we can do here

Painting services in Brighton

The same range we bring to any Melbourne home, whether the job is one room or the whole house inside and out. In Brighton it is usually the exterior and the outdoor timber that need attention first, because salt air off the bay wears a finish faster than anywhere inland.
